Hi all. Bleu Eyes, here. This is my first post. I’m typically a bit shy, but I’m making an effort to come out of my shell. And this…this is something I just had to share. I hope my foster mom reads the post. I think she’ll find it hilarious. I don’t think anything like this happened when we were in foster care, but maybe she will shed some light after this.

It was Tuesday night last week. John was in cleaning our litter boxes and giving us some attention. Lindy came in a little while later to do a few things. As always, when she’s there, she has a ton of things to take care of at the shelter. She sometimes stops in on Tuesday nights after she delivers produce shares through her business.

Anyway, after she’d been there for a while I heard my brother, Why Not, get all excited. He was acting like he’d found some catnip. We all came running to see what the excitement was about. There he was, pulling a bag out of Lindy’s purse. He started prancing down the hall with the bag. Lindy realized what he was doing and took the bag of green beans away from him.

Ok, first of all, what are green beans and how did Why Not know that he liked them?!

It started to calm down a little bit, but out of the corner of my eye I could see Why Not sneaking toward Lindy’s purse again. I told him he should leave it alone, but he had this look in his eyes and I knew he wasn’t giving up. He wanted those beans. So, he pulled them out and started down the hall again. This time, when Lindy started following him, he began backing away from her like “No. These are my green beans and I’m going to take them.” Once he got into the back room, he started gnawing on the bag and beans. Lindy let him chew for a few minutes and then took them away for the final time.

Who knew…my brother’s a vegetarian.

Hey all, Paulo again.

I know I just posted about our land and new building for the cats and dogs, but I am so excited again. All of my posts have been worth it. I met Natalie and Adam today and we decided I should go live with them in Montana.

Natalie read my “winter wonderland” post and thought we might be a good match. I hope they let me start my own blog once we get settled in Montana. I’m thinking Paulo’s Montana has a nice ring to it.

So excited to finally have a home of my own. I’m so happy my foster mom kept sending out good thoughts for me, kept teaching me new things, and always told me I was a good boy. I will absolutely miss her and I know she’ll miss me, but I also know we’re both really excited for my new life with Natalie and Adam, I mean mom and dad.

I have met some great friends here at the rescue. Humans, cats, and dogs. You four-legged critters keep your chins up. The right family is out there for you. Be good and it will happen for you also

Paulo here…and I’m bursting at the seams. Are you ready for this? Thanks to a generous donation from Scott & Julia Jones (note to self – they need a big lick next time I see them), Paws Animal Rescue purchased land on Monday, May 16!!

I haven’t seen it yet, but I hear it’s behind Walmart on Lowell. I also hear that Julia Jones is leading a capital campaign to raise money for a permanent Paws Animal Rescue building on the lot. The building will hold both cats and dogs!

I really hope I’ve been adopted by the time the building is finished (hint, hint to anyone looking for a dog), but I’m really excited for all the cats and dogs that will be housed there.

It’s just great news! I’ve gotta go tell some other people….so a “woof” and I’m out.

Pierre Young Professionals receive raving meows

Hey all. It’s Aubergine writing about a pretty cool thing that happened a month or so ago. Some people from Pierre Young Professionals donated time on a Saturday afternoon to paint the lounge area in the back of the shelter.

For as long as I’ve been here, the back room has been mostly white, with a really weird blue sponge painted area. The shelter volunteers say it was like that when we moved in 9 years ago. It’s out of date, for sure.

I was so happy to see the group of 6 adults and 1 child coming in the front door willing to make our space more fun. A few hours later and we’ve got a brand new lounging area. There will also be a black border added that will have paws painted on it. But, that part’s not done quite yet.

A big meow and purr from all of us at the shelter to the Pierre Young Professionals!

Hi all ~ Just a quick note to say that shortly after my post….I was adopted! I now live with Tommy. He was at the shelter before, too. So happy this blog helped me find my forever home!

In our eyes…

I’ve heard people say it before…you can tell a lot by looking into a person’s eyes. I think you can tell a lot by looking into the eyes of an animal, too. My name is Newt and I’ll prove my point with photos of some friends, including myself.

Here I am, Newt. What can you see in my eyes? Can you tell that I’m not a kitten anymore? I’m 5 1/2. Do you see wisdom? Do my eyes tell you that I crave attention? I meet our volunteers at the door. I follow them down the hall, rubbing their legs. I’m a gentle sweetheart. I want a bed to sleep on at night, to cuddle next to someone.

Cola. Do you see a mischievous boy in these eyes? One who knows what he wants and won’t be told otherwise? Determination to complete the task at hand. Sleek, long body. Content to sit when he’s not on a mission.

Plantain. Sleek and smart. Good looking. Too busy rubbing the camera woman to look directly at the lens.

Cheddar. No longer a kitten, but now a mature 4 year old. Very sure of himself and willing to tell you what he thinks. Although he talks big, is very affectionate with people.

Fresco. Confident young man. Master of the house. Playful to the point of exhaustion.

Carmella. Came to the shelter as a young mother. Watched her kittens go into their forever homes. Is now waiting patiently for hers. Beautiful and friendly. Enjoys attention. Not a mean bone in her body.

I hope you saw something in our eyes which peaked your interest, perhaps enough to adopt one of us. Or tell a friend about us. We’re waiting for our forever home.

It’s tough being a cat…by Harper

It’s tough being a cat at the shelter. We play a good portion of the day and night, we look forward to Thursday nights and Saturdays when the shelter is open and we get to meet new people, and we have parties every Friday and Saturday night. It’s a rough life. So, we catch cat naps every chance we get! Check us out.

Winter Wonderland

Paulo here again. I have so much to tell you since the last time I wrote! My friend Jema got adopted just before Christmas. She has a family and a home just a couple hours from here. Here sister, Peyton, also went to the same town. In fact, their parents are brothers so they’ll get to see each other and play all the time! I’m so happy for both of them.

My foster mom’s son (and his family and dogs) came to visit her for his birthday and Christmas. It was going to be a full household, so I volunteered to go stay with another foster parent for a couple days. My foster mom works so hard and takes such good care of us…I really wanted her to spend some quality time with her family while they were in town.

I wasn’t gone long, though. I was back on Christmas Eve. I spent the evening sleeping on the couch with my foster mom. It was awesome! We all got some soft dog food on Christmas day, new toys, and new treats. I had a great Christmas and hope that you did, too!

Cami and I love the snow! We like to play in it, but it’s hard to play together because we don’t have a fenced yard so our play is sometimes limited. We have a tie-out on a trolley so we can run a lot and smell in most of the yard. Rabbits live under the shed and the smells on the ground make us so excited! It’s great fun to run through the yard smelling where they have been.

This is a real South Dakota blizzard. I heard our foster mom say that is was supposed to snow for 48 hours. There is a lot of snow in the back yard. It is up to my chest when I run through the snow drifts. Check out all that snow in the picture that we took. Our foster mom shoveled out a little space for us to do our outside business. The girls use it but not us big, strong guys.

Can you see the shed way back in the corner? That’s where the rabbits live. I sure am glad that we don’t have to live outside. Winter in South Dakota is just too cold for that!

Check me out on the couch! I love to nap in that corner!

Jema – Star of the Parade of Lights

Hi, Jema here. I’ve never done this blogging thing before, but I read what Paulo had to say and want to say my part, too. I used to live in a foster home out of town, not very far away. I stayed in an indoor/outdoor run during the day while the kids were in school and my foster parents were at work. I complained about the cold enough that they let me move to another foster home in town. My new foster mom comes home at lunch to let us outside, we get some water, some loving, and a treat before she goes back to work. Paulo and I are roommates, but there are two cats and three other dogs that live here too. It’s so much fun! Paulo is good boy and doesn’t chase the cats, but I do…I’m not sure if they thinks it’s fun, but I definitely love it! My foster mom is trying to teach me stuff, but I really don’t want to learn anything right now. I like goofing off and having fun. I always ask her why need to learn stuff? She wants me to learn sit, lay, off, feet on the floor. That one kills me! Why do I need to keep my feet on the floor??? Really!! I have these legs and they want to jump. God wouldn’t make me that way if I shouldn’t do it. Right? I just don’t get these humans and the crazy things they think I need to learn. But in the spirit of the holiday season, I might give her a break and settle down to the business of learning.

Here I am at the most recent Meet & Greet (every 3rd Saturday at the shelter from 4-6pm)

A week ago, I was the star in the Parade of Lights in Pierre. I said no to wearing lights (where would they plug them in?!) but I did accept a glow stick necklace and happily wore a sweater as did some of the other dogs. It was so much fun seeing all of those people. I’m hoping someone saw me strutting my stuff and thinks I might be the perfect dog for them. I hope someone saw Paulo, too. He’s been in foster care longer than me and is really hoping to be in his forever home for the holidays. He’s such a good “big brother”. We play together and chase each other. He is bigger and older than me and has longer legs, but I run faster than him. He’s such a big dope. I love Paulo. Sometimes, I just like to cuddle up and sleep with him.

Speaking of sleeping, I’m kind of tired from playing this afternoon. I think we’ll make it an early night and go to bed now. Oh, but first, I gotta tell you to check out Peyton (my sis!) and me on the Humane Society website: www.pets4adoption.org.

Fresco (& Queso)

Hey There! My name is Fresco. I’m an 8 month old neutered male…and I’m ready to find my forever home! I came to the shelter with my sister, Queso…she the orange and white one in the photo. I’m the tabby and white.

Queso was adopted by a young man about a month ago. Before she left the shelter, we played together all the time! I loved playing with Queso because we played rougher with each other than we would with the other shelter cats.

Before Queso was adopted, I didn’t really “try” to find my forever home. I wanted to stay and protect Queso until she was adopted. Now that she’s found her forever home…and is doing great there (!!!)…I’m ready to find my forever home.

I’m looking for a family that appreciates my quirkiness. I love to play! I’m serious….I LOVE TO PLAY! I do enjoy cuddles and hugs, but my priority right now is action. So, I need a home willing to let me play as much as I want. Once I’m a little older, I’ll settle down….but for now, it’s activity!!!
